Scheme Support Overview

We Help You Navigate the Full Process.

From early application and relay information gathering to site investigation, contractor works and evidence submission, we can help manage the route from assessment to completion.

£1k–£1.5k For relays that can be changed by settings adjustment.
£2.5k–£4k For relays that require full replacement with a new unit.
What We Offer

Support Beyond Training.

Here at G99 Training we can not only train you to become a test engineer, but we can also help get your system registered on the ENA / National Grid scheme, so you do not have to manage the upgrade process alone.

Application Support

We can assist with the application to the DNO and help prepare the information needed for submission.

Site Investigation

We can investigate the site and help determine the type of relay change or upgrade that is required.

Competent Contractor Works

Once approved, the work can be undertaken by competent contractors such as Dave Pallas, registered on the accepted contractors list.

End-to-End Management

We can help manage the process from application to evidence submission, helping you move through the scheme more smoothly.

Loss of Mains Protection

Why This Upgrade Matters.

Generation owners are required by the Distribution Code to install loss of mains (LoM) protection at distributed generation sites.

This helps ensure that, following a fault that isolates sections of the distribution system, distributed generation does not form an autonomous power island with the remaining local demand.

Other faults elsewhere on the GB electricity system should not result in the operation of LoM protection. Two of the most common forms of LoM protection are RoCoF relays and vector shift relays.

It was identified that RoCoF relays and vector shift relays could inadvertently operate and trip distributed generation following events that do not result in islanding. This loss of generation could contribute to a significant system disturbance and widespread loss of supply.

Key Protection Types

RoCoF Relays Rate of Change of Frequency protection used as part of modern Loss of Mains arrangements.
Vector Shift Relays An older form of Loss of Mains protection used on many existing systems.
Other Methods Other forms such as direct intertripping are also available where appropriate.
The supplied content notes that the cost of managing this wider system risk in 2018 exceeded £100m, making scheme support and early action especially important.
Funding Support

Potential Payment Levels Under the Scheme.

Clients who make early applications may benefit from reduced outages and can receive an upgrade payment from National Grid for each relay accepted onto the scheme.

Settings Change
£1k–£1.5k

Payment for Settings Adjustment

The supplied content states that payment may be in the order of £1,000 to £1,500 for relays that can be upgraded by changing settings.

Full Replacement
£2.5k–£4k

Payment for New Relay Units

Where a relay must be replaced with a new unit, the supplied content states the payment may be between £2,500 and £4,000.

Early Action

Early Applications Can Help

Early applications may help reduce delays and outages, while also improving the chance of moving through the process in a more controlled way.

How It Works

A Clear Route From Application to Payment.

To apply for funding support, an application must be submitted to the DNO, who will then assess it against various criteria. We can help guide this process.

01

Gather Relay Details

Information such as relay make, type and settings, along with other project details, needs to be prepared.

02

Submit to the DNO

An application is submitted to the relevant DNO for assessment against scheme criteria.

03

Site Review & Decision

The site and relay configuration are reviewed to determine whether settings change or full replacement is needed.

04

Works Undertaken

Once approved, competent contractors can complete the necessary relay work and required testing.

05

Evidence & Payment

Evidence of the change is provided, after which payment is made to the generator by National Grid.

DNO & Grid Connection

From Site Assessment to Network Evidence.

Relay upgrades sit within a wider connection and compliance process. We can help coordinate the technical information, site work and evidence required around the DNO process.

Full Support

We Can Help Manage the Entire Process.

The change can be done before agreement is reached with the DNO, but evidence must be provided that the relay change was needed and has been completed.

We can help manage the process for you from making the application, carrying out a site investigation to determine the type of change needed, and then undertaking the works for you.

Relay Replacement Competent contractor support for the required protection changes and commissioning.
Application Assistance Help with submission and preparation of supporting information.
Technical Investigation Site and relay review to determine whether settings adjustment or replacement is required.
Undertaking the Works Competent contractor support to carry out the required changes and evidence process.
